Meg Hasbro, senior broker, Burnham & Wood Realty, sat on the edge of her desk, taking care not to dislodge the inbox, the outbox, or any of the stacks of folders and loose papers that hadn't made it into any box yet. She smoothed her blue tweed skirt down her thighs and over her knees. Past her prime she might be, but her legs were still impressive.
"Hello. You have reached . . ."
No no no. She pressed PAUSE. Man Boss was chuckling in her ear: Don't be so grim, Meg, you're scaring the clients away.
She started again, in her smoky whiskey voice with barely suppressed amusement rippling underneath: "Hello. You have reached the office . . ."
Girl Boss, one-time Miss Third Runner-up Connecticut, would hit the roof. She really thought Meg was after her husband, who was indeed closer to Meg's age than her own. The suspicion was so preposterous that Meg had half considered seducing the poor fellow. She didn't think it would be hard...
